National Young Athletes League
There has been a positive response to the composite club formed with Shrewsbury for the NYAL this year. As such, we will continue it for next season with Shrewsbury sharing the costs and responsibilities in the league.
Memberships
There are still some outstanding memberships to be paid, please return your forms now if you wish to continue competing for Oswestry Olympians.
If you are not yet a club member and would like to join, forms will be given out at training in September.
Finally...
Well done to all the athletes who have competed this year, we are very proud of all your individual performances. Please send details of any open competitions you take part in to Keith via the club website.
Thank you to all our volunteers - team managers, coaches, officials, refreshment servers and anyone else who helped the club over the summer. Your support is much appreciated.
Have a restful summer and see you all in September. Tracy---------------------------
Oswestry Olympians Newsletter June 2011
Memberships
If you have not yet paid your club membership please do so immediately otherwise you will be unable to compete as a club or team member. Please ask for a membership form if needed.
NYAL
The composite club formed with Shrewsbury seems to going well despite a couple of hiccups. If you have any thoughts on how things have worked or ideas for improvements, please let me know so that we can decide on how to proceed next year.
Thursday training
Please note that training on Thursdays is £1.50 per hour. Under 11's may only train from 6-7pm whilst all athletes from Year 6 upwards are welcome to stay until 8pm.
There will be no training on Thursday 23rd June and 14th July due to competition. (SYAL - see below) There will also be no training for Under 11's on 30th June as I am unavailable to coach. Natalie and Emily will continue to coach the Under 13's and U15's on this date.
Standards evening
For athletes wishing to record a time or distance in 60m, 100m, 600m, 800m, high jump, long jump, shot, javelin we will be doing so on Tuesday 19th July at Shrewsbury track.
SYAL
Oswestry will be hosting the next Shropshire league meeting at Shrewsbury onThursday 23rd June. We need volunteers to serve refreshments, officiate, and record results. You do not need to be qualified to do any of these jobs so please help on the night. We also need cakes and rolls to sell.
I cannot stress enough how important it is for us to have lots of volunteers to help out on 23rd June at Shrewsbury, particularly to sell refreshments. Last year we had a few parents who had to work really hard and some of the athletes also helped between their events. The workload can be shared if more people help & this event usually helps boost out club funds.
Vests
Numbers of spare vests are dwindling again. If you have borrowed a club vest please return it as soon as possible. The club have ordered new vests so if you ordered one when renewing your membership it will arrive shortly.
Circuit training
Circuit training was cancelled last year due to lack of numbers but we are willing to restart in September if enough people are interested. It is an excellent way to keep fit and is open to athletes from Year 7, including parents. Please let me know if you are interested.
Recruitment
We are trying to recruit new members so if you know of any young people who are interested in athletics or you could put up posters in schools or youth clubs please let me know. Children from Years 3/4/5/6 are invited to train on Thursdays June 16th and July 7th from 6-7pm, older athletes from 6-8pm. First session is free.
Thanks, Tracy

There will be vacancies on the Juniors committee from next summer. Bobby Dixon is giving up her role as Secretary and Andy Dixon will be relinquishing his position as Parent Representative. I will also be standing down as 'Head of Juniors' as this has become too broad a role and would need to be broken down into smaller more manageable responsibilities. I will continue to coach and team manage as needed.
If you would like to help with the Junior section of Oswestry Olympians in any small way please let me know as soon as possible.
The Junior section will cease to compete in league competitions after next summer if we are unable to recruit new volunteers.

We still need more helpers, particularly for Sunday 2nd May and Thursday 17th June when Oswestry Olympians will be hosting meetings. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help on these dates.
Fundraising
To ensure that the club can keep training costs low, we need to raise funds to help to replace equipment and to pay the cost of hiring facilities and transport. All the club coaches and officials give up their time voluntarily to enable your children to train and compete throughout the year. If you have any fundraising ideas or would like to organise an event please let me know.
Thank you,
Tracy------------------------------------------
Oswestry Olympians Newsletter - January 2010Following my decision to focus on coaching and overseeing the Junior Section of the club, I have looked at some of the roles that need volunteers. Many of these responsibilities only require occasional input where others need regular commitment as follows:
1.Team managers
Cross country U11G, U11B, U13G, U13B, U15/17G, U15/17B
Sportshall U11G, U11B, U13G, U13B, U15G, U15B
Track & Field U11G, U11B, U13G, U13B, U15G, U15B, U17W, U17M
In addition we also need someone to liaise with Bridgnorth AC to help organise teams in the U17/20's National Junior Athletics League
2.Responsibility for the spare club vests, taking them to events, collecting them in after use and washing them for the next competition.
3.Managing the sale of club vests to Juniors.
4.Helping out at training sessions in the Sportshall and at the track. After the summer we will no longer have the services of Arnie Wray at indoor sessions and Natalie will be at University so we will need additional volunteers to organise, set up, and supervise training.
5.Volunteering to officiate at competitions - the club will be involved in 8 competitions in Shropshire and the West Midlands and we are required to provide a quota of officials at each. We have some qualified members but need more helpers to assist please.
6.Training to be coaches - we currently have only two coaches who are qualified to run sessions and four assistant coaches, and we rely heavily on Arnie to train the older athletes. If you are interested in coaching please consider undertaking a course and gain a qualification.
7.Refreshments - we serve refreshments twice a year, once at the cross country meeting at Oswestry School in October, and also at the track and field competition at Shrewsbury track in June.
I hope to arrange a meeting in February to clarify volunteers' roles and to ensure that we have enough helpers to enable us to continue competing as a club.
Please support your children and Oswestry Olympians.
Thank You,
Tracy========================================================

Cross country
We still need volunteers to help with refreshments when we host the cross country races at Oswestry School on Sunday 18th October.

U11/13/15 Training
As the nights become dark earlier, no athletes will be allowed to leave the Sportshall without an adult/carer or responsible older sibling.
Presentation Evening
The Juniors Presentation Evening will be held at Oswestry Rugby Club on Friday 13th November.

Tickets available at training sessions soon.
Club vests and hoodies
Club vests can be purchased from Tracy - £12 each. Hoodies £9.50 - £12 from PR Sports, Oswestry.
Names can be embroidered for an additional £3.
If anyone has a club vest that they have borrowed, can they please return it as soon as possible. The vest bag is running low again and we rarely have enough at meetings. You may wish to donate your old vests when you have outgrown them.
Coaches/Officials
We are always desperately short of coaches and officials. Now is the time to attend Level 1 courses if you are interested in gaining an athletics qualification. This would enable you to assist current coaches and officials without too much responsibility, and would benefit the young people of this club.
Juniors Committee - Parents
Two years ago when Kathy and Arnie Wray relocated their home and relinquished the bulk of their responsibilities with Oswestry Olympians, a group of parents and volunteers came together and took over many of their roles to enable the club to continue. As this process has evolved, I have found myself taking on many more responsibilities than I had anticipated and I find that I am unable to continue with so many tasks. Therefore, I intend to cut back on some of these roles and to continue only with coaching and team managing from next Winter.
The future of the Oswestry Olympians lies in your hands, and it will only thrive if more parents volunteer to take on some of the organising that is required to continue the success that the club has enjoyed over many years.
Please come and see me if you can help the club in any way, whether it is by fundraising, selling refreshments or collecting javelins at competitions.

Although the club was promoted to Division 1 in the National Young Athlete's League last season, we decided to remain in the second Division for this year due to the proposed distances we were expected to travel and the costs involved.
There are plans for the National League to be restructured next summer and we hope to move up to a higher Division in 2010, visiting venues with less travelling time and so reduced costs.

Parents
We rely on parents to volunteer to help our team of officials to rake the sand pit, retrieve javelins and replace high jump bars etc. This year we would like to be prepared before the season starts and are asking each family to supply an adult helper at one meeting during the summer. We appreciate that parents come to competitions to watch and support their own children so the more volunteers we have the easier it will be to enable this to happen.
In particular, we will need as many volunteers as possible at the meetings we host on 18th June at Shrewsbury and 3rd May at Deeside. Please complete the attached proforma stating your preferred date(s) to help.
Please do not worry about not knowing about the rules our qualified officials leading the events will provide guidance. If anybody is interested in finding out more about track and field events an officials course is planned for Shropshire soon. It provides basic knowledge about how to time and measure various athletics disciplines and helps you to understand some of the main rules. Please ask Tracy for details.
Team managers for track and field season:
U11 Boys and Girls - Ellie Johnson
U13 Girls - Natalie Bathers U13 Boys - Tracy Bathers
U15 Girls - Tracy Bathers U15 Boys - Sandy Ogden
U17 Girls - Tracy Rowson U17 Boys - Sandy Ogden
In previous years the club has been very lucky to receive a grant towards funding a coach to transport athletes to Shrewsbury track each Tuesday. This year we have been unable to access this money due to changes at UK Athletics, although we are grateful to Oswestry Sports Council who donated £200 to the club. Therefore, we plan to hold a fundraising event sometime in the summer. All ideas welcome.

Junior Athletes Newsletter

Please read it carefully.

Under 11s - no Thursday training during these weeks.

Thursday indoor training (Arnie's group) 6pm-7pm and Weight Training
7pm -8pm - as usual Thursday 5th April. No training Thursday 12th April.
Summer Training Arrangements from Tuesday 17th April.
As you may have read in the paper, the club has been awarded a grant by England Athletics (W. Midlands Region) to help towards funding coach transport to the new track at Shrewsbury every Tuesday from 17th April until 17th July.
This is for all age groups and we will be going whatever the weather!!
Coach will be leaving The Pedigree at 5.15pm. Athletes will train at the track from 6pm - 7.30pm. Arrive back at The Pedigree approx 8.10pm.
Cost will be £2 per athlete towards coach fare and track fee.
This is a great opportunity for Olympian athletes to make use of the new facilities at Shrewsbury. Please take advantage of it.
If we run out of space on the coach, we will just have to bring a few cars as well! But obviously we will have to wait and see how it goes.
Thursday outdoor training from * 19th April: At The Marches School playing fields.
Under 11s (Years 4&5) and Under 13s (Years 6&7) 6pm - 7pm
Under 15s and above (Year 8 and above)

7pm - 8pm Track and Field training.
Cost - £1 club members/£2 non-members.
every Thursday until 12th July except for 26th April, 24th May, 21st June when club is competing at Shropshire Young Athletes League meetings.
Training during the school summer holidays - it may be possible to organise some sessions, but nothing definite yet.
Club Membership: due in April. Existing members will be notified about renewing membership. Please contact Sandy Ogden Junior Membership Secretary if you would like some information about becoming a club member.
New Pick-up Point: We are trying a new venue for coach pick-ups from April, as there are increasing problems with leaving cars at Mile End. We will now be meeting at The Pedigree car park and cars may be left there, provided they are parked at the Cattle Market end.
Officials Course for beginners:
As always, the club is desperately short of qualified officials, with the burden as ever, falling on a few people to turn out and officiate at meetings.
All of the leagues we compete in now award bonus points to clubs providing officials - timekeepers, track judges and field judges. Those clubs that do not are therefore penalised. Please consider getting involved and helping us.
A course to introduce people to officiating has been organised for Saturday 28th April at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham 10am-2pm (minimum age 14). Please contact Stuart Paul for further details. Email stuart.paul@usa.net
However if you are not interested in becoming a qualified official, we will still need parental support to help at meetings during the summer months.
Club hoodies and polo shirts:
These can be ordered directly from PR Sports in Oswestry. Just call in and ask for details. They will be happy to oblige!
Club vests: We are hoping to have a range of junior sizes available to sell on Thursday training nights and would encourage all who are competing regularly for the club to "invest" in their own vest as we now have very few to lend out.
Shrewsbury Warm-up Open Meeting. Sunday 15th April at the new track behind SCAT on London Road 11am start.
Track and Field events for Under 11s upwards. Enter on the day. All welcome.
Finally - despite all the recent "doom and gloom", following on from the loss of Park Hall Stadium, we are looking forward to the forthcoming track and field season with optimism.
We have a great group of young athletes and a club with a great team spirit that is often the envy of those in clubs with better training facilities.
Please support your club by helping in any way you can.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL PARENTS
Club Officials
You may or may not be aware that at every athletics meeting which we attend Oswestry Olympians are obliged to provide a team of adults to help with officiating i.e. measuring, track judging, timekeeping, recording results etc.
WE NO LONGER HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO FILL THESE ROLES.
As I'm sure you'll understand, meetings cannot operate if officials are not made available by the participating clubs. We now need a team of parents (or other interested adults) to take on these roles at each meeting we attend, and for some of these people to become qualified.
We currently only have Kathy Wray and Keith Weetman who are qualified Field officials. Neither of these have children who compete in any of the leagues any more and both already fulfil other major voluntary roles for the club. They cannot be available for every meeting.
The time has come for parents of younger children to get involved by accompanying us to meetings, helping with officiating and when possible, becoming qualified.
In addition, Paul Eaton is the club's only qualified Timekeeper and we have no qualified Track Judges.
Many thanks to the parents who allowed themselves to be bullied into helping last Sunday at Deeside. Without their help the meeting could not have been completed. What we now need is a large team of volunteers who will become self-sufficient, releasing Keith and Kathy to do their many other jobs.
Immediately urgent is the next National Young Athletes meeting on Sunday 20th May at Warrington where we need 6 helpers. In the absence of 6 volunteers we will have to withdraw from this meeting and from other league commitments.
Personally I would find this hard to cope with after all the time I and the other coaches have spent in helping prepare our young athletes for these competitions.
Please contact Kathy on 01691 656961 as soon as possible to volunteer your services, otherwise we may find ourselves with a wonderful new training facility next year but no league competition.
Arnie Wray (Senior Club Coach)

As you will no doubt be aware, the club is desperately short of qualified officials and coaches and even unqualified helpers. This has reached a crisis situation and the current position is that unless we have more people stepping forward to help then we will be unable to provide training sessions for all the age groups from next April.
Without additional help we will also be very stretched during the winter season.
Kathy needs another adult to help with Under 11s on Thursday evenings from 5pm - 6pm.
Ideally the same person each week but if this is not possible then maybe several parents could organise a rota? Please contact Kathy if you can help.
During the winter months there are usually courses organised in Shropshire for people interested in taking an officials or a coaching qualification. Please consider carefully whether you could get involved and get in touch with Arnie (656961) if you would like any further information.

Voluntary help at meetings:
If your child is selected to compete in a meeting and you are coming along to support them, perhaps you would consider giving a hand to our few (and often very hard-pressed!) officials? We are required as a club to provide officials at each meeting - otherwise we are penalised and lose points. At present we have only 3 qualified Field Officials and one Timekeeper. We have no Track Judges. This is a dire situation and we are relying on the same few people to help all the time. If you would like to get involved in any way please see any of the coaches.
Parking/dropping children off.
·The Marches School have asked specifically that parents dropping children off for Olympians use the main school car park, on Morda Road and DO NOT come via Penylan Lane. This is to avoid congestion in a very narrow road.
·A number of parents are continuing to use Penylan Lane and local residents have been complaining about the traffic.
Please use main Marches car park from now on.
We are very grateful to The Marches for the use of their field for training and it is very important that we comply with their requests about access.

There are several Open Meetings over the next few months at various venues. You do not have to be selected - entry is open to all.

VACANCY. The club are looking for a few people who would be willing to organize a Catering Team whenever Olympians are hosting a meeting and need to provide refreshments : usually 3-4 times a year. This is both a service to our club members & visitors but also generates money for the club funds. Could you fill this role? Christine Smith currently looks after the catering equipment - urns, jugs etc and buys the food for events. We are very grateful to her for all her hard work. She now needs a well earned rest and we need people to replace her. Please give Christine a ring if you would like to find out more 655387. Please consider if you could help us in this important job.
Club vests: We have a good stock of junior size vests which currently cost £7. These prices will soon be going up - so if you haven't yet got your own club vest this is a good time to "in-vest" in one! Please give Sian West a ring (682600) or ask Kathy.
* If you have borrowed a club vest and have still got it - PLEASE GIVE IT BACK!
Finally - don't forget the club website www.oswestryolympians.co.uk to keep up to date with all that is happening in the club. Many thanks to Keith Weetman for all his hard work in maintaining and updating this site.

THE CLUB NEEDS MORE PARENTS HELP
We keep returning to this subject. The club is run by parents for our children, but we need more parents to be involved. We particularly need more assistance with coaching. Whilst it would be great if some qualified coaches came forward to help. In reality what we require are parents, particularly of younger children, to assist and learn from our existing coaches who are all parents of successful young Olympians themselves. As you might expect their children's success & enjoyment of sport was more than a little influenced by their parents involvement. However our coaching problem remains & is becoming more critical. If you feel you can help with coaching, please speak to any coach who will be only too aware of our needs, or myself, and discuss the situation.
We also need more parents to help with officialing, both in the sportshall, but most importantly in the summer months Track & Field season. This is not an onerous task, but a never the less an important one, as we will not be able to compete next year without them. We have to provide a Team of Field officials who work together to run particular field event (Long Jump, High Jump etc.) & Track Officials who assist with the starts and running of races. Again if you are interested please speak to a coach or myself.
If anyone is really interested in Track Officialing the current Shropshire AA Chairman Roy Rogers (yes that really is his name) is offering an opportunity to become a qualified graded Track Official. He is running a Track Officials Course, in which he is determined to ensure he gets all participants qualified, as it will be his final course before he retires at the end of the year. The course is on Sunday 30th September at Deeside starting at 10am
Once again We Urgently Need Parents to help us keep the club going.
If you think you can help you can help in any way you can e-mail any coach or myself.

Please take note of the dates and times and make use of the opportunities for some summer training.
There is some doubt about whether we have enough coaches to maintain the winter coaching which we have offered over the past few years and considerable doubt about next summer unless we can recruit new volunteers.
We will keep you informed as these issues become clear.
For the time being Winter Training will begin on Tuesday 4th September at Gatacre Playing Fields and Thursday 6th September at the Marches Sports Hall, Upper Brook Street. See separate attached letter for further details.
