    Ollie Blake chosen for Antwerp

Ollie Blake has been chosen for the Midlands team going to Antwerp in Belgium 24th to 27th August.

This is a real opportunity for Ollie who has made great improvements to his 800m times this year.

    Result
26/8 Ollie came third in his heat in a time of 1:53.96, just half a second outside his PB

In her last English Schools Track & Field Championships, Gemma Weetman, who had been given the honour of being made Shropshire team captain, went one better & took Gold in the long jump, with a jump of 6m 7cm. Gemma goes over 6meters & collects the club's first GB gold medal
Gemma Weetman represented Great Britain & N.I. in a combined events international in Eaubonne in France, where she competed as an U20 in the pentathlon. This was Gemma's first GB vest.

She started well with a PB in the 60m Hurdles 8.99 & an equal PB in High Jump 1m63 & 9m09 PB in the Shot. She followed this with a superb 6m01 in long jump (making her only the second U20 in the UK to go over 6meters so far this year) & then took 2 seconds off her 800m PB 2:20.55 to give her a 3822 points score & the Gold medal.

This puts Gemma 5th in the UK U20 all time rankings. It's also the first time any Club member has has collected a gold medal representing Great Britain.

    English Schools Combined Events 2005

Gemma Weetman collected her first English Schools Gold medal in their final track & field meeting, the Combined Events, winning the Senior girls event at Southampton. She is the first Shropshire Champion of any age group boy or girl for 18 years since Sarah Damm won at the very first Championships, just before Gemma was borne.

The English Schools Championships is the largest schools age championships in the world. Each county has a quota of athletes it can enter, and there is an entry standard for each event, which is roughly equivalent to AAA Grade 1. It is the pinicle of most young peoples athletics. This year Olympians were represented by Sian Davis (High Jump), Toby Griffiths (800m), Gemma Weetman (Long Jump) & Charlotte Roberts (300mH). All except for Toby had been before.

Toby went to his first English Schools full of hope & came away with a Bronze medal, lowering his PB from 2:11.5 last year to 2:01.62 in the final. Almost a 10 seconds reduction, and a new U15's club record.
Gemma Weetman also came away with a Bronze medal. Despite being in the junior year of her age group, she beat all except the two girls on National Athletics funding. She also increased her PB & the club record to 5m87

Sian Davies too made the podium coming 4th (there are six places on the podium at English Schools) with 1m65 which is also a new club record
Charlotte Roberts progressed to the semi finals in the 300m Hurdles, she too lowered her PB, to 46.74, & set a new club record.

    GCSEs & Athletics
Do brighter children just enjoy the challenge of Athletics or does Athletics perhaps help our members to do better in their GCSEs?
The seven Olympian members who sat their GCSEs in 2004, Ollie Blake,  Luke Farrow, Matt Finch, Katie Griffiths, Katie Humphries, Emma Thomas, & Gemma Weetman, between them achieved 75 higher grades, mostly at A & A*. Year after year I am surprised by the GCSE results of our members. My daughter said that continuing her training during the study & exam period, helped her to "switch off" & relax.
