National Sportshall Final - NIA Birmingham 12/4/2003

Charley Broom's performance at the regional finals in February earned her an invitational place to the National Final. Her invitation was well founded as she gained a Bronze medal in the Standing Long Jump. Over 300,000 young athletes took part in the various competitions that culminated in these finals & so this was a superb result for Charley
Gemma Weetman returned to activity today at the NIA after almost 3 months total rest, her lack of fitness meant she was unable to challenge for the very top positions, but in fields of over 40 she managed a very creditable 10th in the 2 laps, 8th in the Standing Long Jump & 6th in the speed bounce.
Also justifying an invitational place was Telford's "Big" Ben Reiksteins. Despite being one of the youngest competitors there, Ben not only took Silver in the 2 Laps but also took Gold in the Standing Long Jump in which he set a new UK Record of 2m74cm. Just what will he be able to achieve next year whilst still in the same age group?

English Schools National Cross Country Championships - 8th March - Brighton

And then there was Allison. Allison Lavender finished in an unbelievable nth place at the English Schools, & was instantly invited to represent England in an international in Dublin. According to Paul Sanderson (Shropshire Schools Organiser) this is the best ever performance by a Shropshire girl in E.S. X-C Champs and the first time a Shropshire girl has been selected to represent England (English Schools). Allison was about 14th after the first lap, which was tremendous in itself, but on the second lap she decided to "go for it" as she couldn't see many athletes ahead! She was totally overcome at the end when she realised where she'd finished.

After the race, she was presented with a certificate and T-shirt and then had to go to the "International Office" where she got given a full England kit and details of the British Schools International in Dublin on 29th March. She's never flown before either!

West Midlands Regional Sportshall Final - Hereford - 2003

In this winters Sportshall regional final at Hereford U13 girl Charley Broom recorded what has proved to be the best standing long jump in the entire UK competition. Charlie also broke the Welsh standing Long Jump record - Charley is now looking a real potential for the future.

At the same meeting, U15 girl Gemma Weetman, became the first Shropshire athlete ever to win the event. Gemma becomes one of only 12 girls in The British Isles to gain an automatic place in the UK Finals at Birmingham in April. All the other competitors in the event will have qualified as part of their county teams.

Oswestry Olympians have won the 2003 Shropshire Sportshall League Trophy. This win is the 11th year in succession that Arnie Wray has led our teams to victory. Well done to all the young athletes involved especially those who supported their team in the last crucial meeting. A special thanks to Coach Ellen Harrison who coaches the under 11s & has coached almost all our members at the start of their time with the club. Ellen has instilled in them the fun to be had from athletics & will be greatly missed when she retires from the club in a few weeks time.

There were a large number of trophies on display that the club had won during the year.  One of the highlights of the year was the club's overall victory in the Shropshire Sports Hall for the tenth consecutive year. Andy Knott, a former coach and past chairman of the club, presented Arnie Wray with an engraved silver plate as a memento for the club of this tremendous achievement. A number of former athletes who had been involved in the Sports Hall successes were also present.

Two young athletes represented their country during the season. Susan Edwards represented Wales in the 100m Hurdles at two Under 20 Internationals in Grangemouth and Aberdare and Ellen Greaves represented Welsh Schools at and Under 20 X-C International in Brecon.

Their commitment and hard work have been a great asset to the club and they will be greatly missed. Everyone at the club wishes them well as they move on to new things.

Thanks were given to everyone who had helped in any way during the year, but parents were also told that the club needed continued support in order to achieve continued success and that more coaches, officials and helpers were needed.
