Shropshire
Young Athletes Cross Country League - 1st Meeting 6th Oct 2002
Oswestry
Olympians travelled to the Phoenix Centre, Dawley to compete in the
first meeting of the Shropshire Young Athletes X-C League and came
away with some excellent team and individual results
As this was
the first X-C meeting of the new season, a number of young athletes
had moved up an age group and several others were making their debut
for the club.
Unfortunately in some of the age groups , Olympians were unable to
put out full teams. This is a particular problem in the Under 13 age
group (Years 7 and 8), where the club is very anxious for some new recruits.
Oswestry
had two winners at Dawley. Florence Roberts ran strongly from the
front to victory in the Under 11 Girls race and Alison Lavender in
her first race in an Oswestry vest , ran a well paced race to run out
a comfortable winner and lead her team to victory in the Under 15 Girls.
Josh Ogden
moved up an age group and ran exceptionally well to finish in 2nd
place in the Under 13 Boys 3000m race. Oliver Blake was 2nd in the
Under 15 Boys 4000m with brother Toby 3rd in the Under 11 Boys race.
Results from
Dawley were as follows:
Under 11 Girls:
1st Florence Roberts, 4th Jenny Boskett, 9th Kerry Rogers, 14th Jodie
Phillips, 15th Mia Ogden. Team 2nd on the day.
Under 11 Boys: 3rd
Toby Blake, 8th Ashley Stringer, 12th George Richmond, 13th Jack
Roberts. Team 2nd on the day.
Under 13 Girls:
9th Georgina Roberts and 15th Alison Eccleston. Team 5th on
the day.
Under 13 Boys: 2nd
Josh Ogden, 7th Toby Griffiths. Team 3rd on the day.
Under 15 Girls:
1st Alison Lavender, 8th Charlotte Roberts, 10th Gemma Weetman, 12th
Emma Thomas, 14th Katy Humphreys. Team 1st on the day.
Under 15 Boys: 2nd
Oliver Blake, 5th Ben Griffiths, 8th Ashley Martin. Team 2nd
on the day.
After the
first league meeting Olympians are lying in second place overall but
are almost 500 points behind Telford. Oswestry are hosting the next
meeting on 27th October at Oswestry School Playing Fields and are
hoping for a better turn out of athletes, especially in the Under 13
age group.
If there are
any youngsters in Year 5 and above who enjoy cross country running,
Olympians invites you to come along to their training sessions.
Please contact John Roberts (773202) or Kathy Wray (656961) for
further details.
Gemma takes another medal - AAA U15/U17 Multi Events Champs Stoke 29/9/2002
Gemma
Weetman finished a great season with another medal at National
level when she took Silver at the AAA's meeting at Stoke on Sunday
29th Sept in the U15 Girls Pentathlon. She achieved another PB on the
day with a score of 2865. Gemma had the previous week competed at the
English Schools multi events finals at Derby, having earned her place
by winning the North West Regional final at Preston earlier in the
year. However her performance at Derby had been a disappointment only
managing 24th place. With this in mind her determination at the AAA
meeting was palpable and she improved on her previous PB by 160
points. If only she had managed the same total the previous week at
English Schools she would have taken a bronze instead of 24th place.
Gemma is now ranked Nationally at both Pentathlon & Long Jump.
