    April 2003 - Karen Tinsley

After a long break the AOM page returns with one of our longest serving Juniors Karen Tinsley who is a hurdler. Karen has always been natural sprinter & still holds the first record in the Club records list for the 50m sprint, which she set way back as an under 11 back in 1996. Karen flies low over the hurdles & often slams the top of hurdles with the knee of her trailing leg, which often tends to be a slightly different blue-ish colour. She had a frustrating season in 2001, but rather than giving up she returned more determined in 2002 & was rewarded by earning a place representing Shropshire in the 2002 English Schools Track & Field Championships in Nottingham.

Favourite event ? - My Favourite event has to be sprint hurdles, for the simple reason that this seems to be what I am best at. I started hurdling over the small foam hurdles in the sports hall and carried it on from there and am now looking forward to starting 100m hurdling.

Most hated event? - My most Hated event has to be one of the throwing events & probably my worst throwing event has to be hammer.

Best achievement? - That is definitely achieving the qualifying time for English schools and representing Shropshire at the English Schools at Nottingham taking part in the 80m hurdles. It was something that I had been working towards for a while and was a great achievement for me after the disappointment of not getting the qualifying time in previous years. Most of my notable achievements have been in sport and have almost always included athletics however I was also part of the rounders team at school that won the North Shropshire rounders tournament a couple of times. Away from sport probably getting all my GCSEs was a pretty good achievement.

Biggest disappointment? - Biggest disappointment as I mentioned earlier has probably been getting so close to English Schools qualifying times before but an illusive half-second always stopping me.

Who is your Sporting hero? - Paula Radcliffe for all she achieved with the commonwealth and the European champs a truly inspirational person for all the determination and dedication she shows to the sport, and also Colin Jackson for all his achievements in hurdles and again like Paula inspirational.

What food do you hate most? - Sprouts I don't like anything about their smell or taste.

Who is your Favourite Group/Artist -  I like to listen to a variety of music but at the moment I am listening to David Gray And I have say his new album is absolutely brill!!!

Favourite TV program - Linda Green, I love this programme basically because it is an excellent comedy.

Favourite Film - Lord of the Rings. The special effects are excellent and even though it was a long film I enjoyed every minute- I can't wait to see the next one.
What is your ambition - My Ambition is to get to Welsh Schools this year and do well there. As for outside of athletics, I want to do well in my AS exams but as for the long term I don't know what sort of Job I want to do.

What would you like to see change -  Firstly I would like to see more athletics on the TV and secondly more money being put into young athletes and providing good training facilities all around the country.
    What is your training schedule?
    During the winter:-

Tuesday nights - Circuit training however I don't go to the Marches  to do this (where Olympians have their session) I have to do circuits at home.

Thursday night - One hour of hurdling and one hour of weights

Saturdays - I do sprints training either at Oswestry School or Gateacre.
Once a month there is also a training session for hurdlers at stoke.

In the summer this changes to:-

    Tuesday nights - Hurdling

    Thursday night - Sprint training.

Saturday - There may be some further Hurdles training.

I would just like to add that Oswestry Olympians has been a big part of my life since I joined as an Under 11, and has possibly been one of the best things that I have done and I have gained lots of new friends. However none of the success that I have had in athletics would have happened with out all of the coaching, in particular from Arnie. Thank You to everyone involved in the Olympians.
