    Athlete of the Month - Jan 2001 - Feb 2001 - Apr 2001 - May 2001 - July 2001

    July 2001 - Susan Furlonger

Athlete of the Month Susan Furlonger, who specialises in Triple Jump, has been with the club since 1993 and is the clubs most successful junior athlete of all time. She is a Gold medalist at the English Schools, has represented both Scotland & Great Britain at International level. She also holds club records in disciplines as diverse as 200m Sprint, High Jump, Long Jump, Javelin, 300m Hurdles (?!*?), as well as Triple Jump. Susan is currently at university and being coached by international Triple Jump coach Aston Moore.

Sharon Wray, Susan Furlonger, Coach Arnie Wray, & Melissa Harris. All 3, medalists at the English Schools, were coached by Arnie

Favorite event - Triple jump - for obvious reasons really!

Most hated event - 300m Hurdles/800m - Arnie will know exactly what I mean. Those events really hurt and I don't like pain!!!

Best athletic achievement - Winning the English Schools in 1999. That was what opened the door to everything else I achieved in that year and the event that got me noticed.

Biggest disappointment I don't really have one. I don't like to dwell on disappointments.

Sporting hero - Denise Lewis - anyone who can run an 800m after six other events deserves my respect!!
Favorite food - Sweet & Sour Chicken Cantonese Style

Most hated food - Anything with fresh cream on it

Favorite Group/Artist - Sisqo or Lucy Pearl, I can't decide

Favorite TV program - Any quiz show - I love general knowledge but only if I know the answers because it makes me feel clever!

Favorite Film - The Green Mile

What is your ambition - My ambition is to make my parents proud of me. I think I'm getting there

About Olympians - I don't think that there is another club in the county that makes children love athletics as much as Olympians does. Although the club is successful, the emphasis has never been placed on doing well all the time (hence the Cheshire League!!!) There is no sort of elitism going on so everyone who joins the club knows that they will get a chance to put on a vest and compete for Oswestry in one thing or another. I think the fact that I had been at the club for the best part of half of my life reflects the enjoyment that I and many other young athletes get from the Olympians. The coaches are patient even with the most difficult of youngsters and on the whole everyone seems to get on. The club boasts an atmosphere that many other clubs have good reason to be envious of.

What would you like to see change - I don't think there is anything I would change about Olympians. After all, it has worked well enough for me up until now!! Generally in athletics, I would like to see the abolishment of some of the stupid rules which seem to serve no real purpose other than to be awkward, such as the bans placed on athletes wishing to change clubs and the rule, which has affected me personally, which prevents me from competing for my region simply because I have competed for my national team which happens not to be England (ed.-in fact it's Scotland). Also I would like to see more funding going to the up-and-coming athletes. It seems pointless giving all the money to athletes who are already there when they are receiving so much help already.

What is your training schedule? - I train 5 days a week: 4 times at the track with my coach and once on my own. At the moment I'm doing 3 weights sessions and 2 fitness sessions because of a slight injury but normally I will do 2 weights sessions (one on Thursday and one on Sunday), 6-8 200m on my own on a Tuesday, some bounding, hurdle work and general conditioning on a Wednesday and something similar on a Saturday.
