Athlete
of the Month for May isJames
Henderson,
who is an all round track & field athlete. He
always seems to have a smile on his face, and will have a go at almost
anything. James has been with the club since 1996 & is in his
final year as an under 15. He currently holds Club records in 60m,
80m, 80m hurdles, Shot, Long Jump & Pole Vault, but I would say
he was a hurdler.
Favorite
event:
My favorite event is either the long jump or the hurdles. I also
really enjoy the pentathlon as I can do 5 different events which
includes hurdles and long jump.
Most
hated event: I
don't really have a hated event but I think if I had to choose one
it would be long distance. (Even
so, he has been known to help make up a team in Cross Country &
McDonald's Road Relays!)
Oswestry's
successful 1999 Millennium Games Team Best
achievement: It
was back in under 11's. In athletics weekly I was ranked second best
50m runner in England. I was really pleased because I had no idea I
was so highly ranked. Another big achievement for me was being
selected to both run and play football for Shropshire.
James
taking bronze at Shrewsbury in 97 with what looks like Andy Smith
taking gold Biggest
disappointment: When
I was in year 7, I was running for the school in the North
Shropshire Championships. I was in the hurdles and I had to run
against year 8's as well as year 7's in the race. Because of this the
hurdles were higher than I was used to. I got to the final by coming
2nd in my heat. In the final I was winning all the way until I came
to the last hurdle. I fell and cut all my shoulder, but I got up and
managed to come 3rd.
Sporting
hero: I
think I have 2. I've liked Ato Boldin (Have
I spelt that right?)
for ages and I was really pleased to see him get silver at Sydney. I
also really admire Mark Lewis-Francis, he is an amazing athlete and
will brake the world record for sure in years to come.
Favorite
food: I'll
eat anything except raw onions!
Favorite
film: I
haven't got one but comedies are always good
What
is your ambition: To
be honest I don't really know. I know I'd like to be involved with
sport but apart from that I'm stumped!
Training
schedule: I
usually train for Olympians once a week on Thursday, but if I can
make Tuesday's training session as well, I go. I also go to football
training once a week and swimming on Saturdays. On Sunday I usually
have a football match or Athletics event. (not much time for homework!)
What
do you think about Olympians: Olympians
is brilliant. It keeps you fit and is really enjoyable. I think more
people should join, as in Oswestry a lot of kids just walk about town
doin' nothing. Olympians also has a lot of trouble with football. At
about under 15 (where I am now) a lot of the boys drop out to play
football and they think it's boring. I think it's ace. I play
football and keep up Olympians.
What
would you like to see change : I
would like to see Olympians get a tartan track. It will probably
never happen but it would really help our athletes.
