Athlete
of the Month for February Sharon Wray, who
specialises in Shot Putt, has been with the club since 1991. She has
been with Olympians longer than almost any other Junior and is in her
final year of A Levels. She currently holds Club records in Shot Putt
but also for Discus & High Jump
Sharon
with some of Shropshire's team, showing her delight at her success in
the English Schools Favorite
event: Well
the event I'm best at it is Shot so I guess it's my favorite.
Most
hated event: The
event which fills me with dread the most has got to be the 3000m!
Best
athletic achievement: No
doubt about this, my greatest ever athletic achievement was getting
the bronze medal at the English Schools in 1999. To me that was like
winning the Olympic gold, it just showed me what I can achieve
through training hard and persevering. I would tell anyone right now
to stick at it, simply to one day have the chance to stand on the
podium at the English Schools.But
also competing for Northern Ireland. It was such an honour to
compete for a country and it just made me realise that it was all
worth it. I had such a brilliant time on the trips with the team and
made so many new friends, and even if it was to only happen once,
your international vest and the fact that you got chosen to represent
your country can never be taken away from you.

All 3, medalists at the English Schools, were coached by her dad Arnie Biggest
disappointment: After
winning that medal and realising what I was capable of, it was such
a bitter disappointment to do so badly the following year. I had such
high expectations of myself to do well again and when it all went
wrong I was really upset. The whole experience has made me even more
determined to train really hard and come back even better.
Sporting
hero: Denise
Lewis without a doubt. Ever since I met her in person 2 years ago
and realised what a lovely person she was, as well as being a
fantastic athlete determined and committed, she's been my absolute hero.
Favorite
food: I
love salad and soup, along with freshly baked bread (especially my
Mums!), and Chicken Korma!
Most
hated food: I
really can't stand fish, mashed potato or sprouts!
Favorite
Group/Artist: An
American group called Ben Folds Five, I went to see them live last
year which was absolutely fantastic, also Dido and Lene Marlin (ask
Dad about all these, he loves them too!).
Favorite
TV program:
Dawson's Creek, I absolutely love it! But I also really like Angel
and Friends.
Favorite
Film: No
one particular favorite, 'Stand By Me', 'The Sixth Sense',
'Gladiator', 'Con Air' to name just a few.
What
is your ambition: Where athletics is concerned I
have no particular desire to be a world famous athlete or anything. I
just enjoy what I do and want to fulfill my potential. This
time next year I hope to be at university in Lancaster where I
intend to continue athletics and also netball. When I finish
university, hopefully with a degree! I want to travel and see as much
of the world as possible, hopefully by this time being able to speak
fluent French! and eventually find a job doing something I love.
Bronze Medal presentation About
Olympians:
I think the whole organisation is fantastic. It's a brilliant thing
for youngsters to get involved in for many different reasons, and
there is no way I could have achieved what I have without Olympians.
It's friendly, fun, beneficial and a brilliant hobby. Plus the fact
that it is a really successful club! When I go away to university I
will miss Olympians terribly. Of course I will still train but it
just won't be the same as the training sessions at the club I have
been a member of for 9 years. I would encourage anyone to get
involved with Olympians, if only just for the social side, you don't
actually have to be good at anything.
What
would you like to see change: I
don't know if there are too many things about Olympians that should
change, but one thing that does bother me is the severe lack of older
athletes. There are so many younger athletes to choose from but when
it comes to the under 17 age group and above, you can count the
athletes on one hand! I don't know how to improve this but in years
to come I would love to see the club succeeding in the older age
groups as well as the younger ones.
This is
what it's all about on the day
